Instrument Choices When Learning Sheet Music

Ready to learn how to read sheet music? The hardest part for some is selecting the right instrument. Most music teachers will agree that the piano is the best choice. Even if your desire is to learn how to play guitar.

You can pick up an inexpensive keyboard now days for under one hundred dollars at best buy or on EBay. The key is to have something to practice on.

Reading music is like learning another language - one that crosses borders and cultures. The ability to understand what you hear when you listen to your favorite song enhances as your own skill improves.

With a piano we have a set of keys that are clearly defined and repeat over and over making it easy to learn and then apply the music reading to a flute, guitar or even singing.

Another great place to find a piano or piano keyboard is at garage sales. I had a student pick up an old up-right grand piano for fifty dollars!

The true name of a piano is: piano-forte. On sheet music you will see the symbol 'p' which means softly, and 'f' which means loud. This came about because the predecessor was a harpsicord which only played music at one sound level.

Other notations are tell you how fast or slow to play a song and much more which we will get into on our next video lesson.

How To Read Sheet Music

The house was old and had cracks that lined both the outside and the inside. As we rang the bell a woman who matched the house appeared in the tiny doorway She was my first music teacher. There at a piano yellowed keys I began learning how to read sheet music.

I had never seen someone this old but her voice was as smooth and creamy as butter. As her fingers gently moved across the keys of the piano music filled the air - I was hooked.

Sometime later she passed on and I went to study with her sister. If ever there were sisters who represented the witches in the Wizard of Oz . . . her sister was definitely not the good witch. If I hadn't had the chance to study with the kind sister I likely would have never enjoyed music as much as I do. Practice became unpleasant and I would have quit but something burned inside of me. It was the music. There is something about feeling the music and experiencing the energy that never leaves you.

I remember my mother always saying to me when I didn't want to practice reading notes or learning a new song, "Someday you may want to be a music teacher yourself and show others how to play piano." Of course like any teen I was certain I would never do that!

Yes you guessed it I became a piano teacher when my children were young. Now I share what I know with teens, adults and others who don't have time or can afford the expensive music lessons I went through.

Here is where my story ends and yours begins if you are ready to learn how to read sheet music.
