How To Read Sheet Music

The house was old and had cracks that lined both the outside and the inside. As we rang the bell a woman who matched the house appeared in the tiny doorway She was my first music teacher. There at a piano yellowed keys I began learning how to read sheet music.

I had never seen someone this old but her voice was as smooth and creamy as butter. As her fingers gently moved across the keys of the piano music filled the air - I was hooked.

Sometime later she passed on and I went to study with her sister. If ever there were sisters who represented the witches in the Wizard of Oz . . . her sister was definitely not the good witch. If I hadn't had the chance to study with the kind sister I likely would have never enjoyed music as much as I do. Practice became unpleasant and I would have quit but something burned inside of me. It was the music. There is something about feeling the music and experiencing the energy that never leaves you.

I remember my mother always saying to me when I didn't want to practice reading notes or learning a new song, "Someday you may want to be a music teacher yourself and show others how to play piano." Of course like any teen I was certain I would never do that!

Yes you guessed it I became a piano teacher when my children were young. Now I share what I know with teens, adults and others who don't have time or can afford the expensive music lessons I went through.
